From Cave Beck's The Universal Character, by which all Nations of the World may Understand One Another's Conceptions, Reading out of one Common Writing their Own Mother Tongues, published in 1657. The frontispiece shows a seated Beck (or, at least, a European) handing his project over to an African, an Indian, and a Native American, who gestures his acceptance.
