Chladni Figures

In 1680, Robert Hooke -- typically tagged as "the guy who discovered the cell" -- noticed unique patterns when he ran a bow along the edge of a glass plate covered with flour.

One hundred years later, Ernst Chladni noticed the same patterns in sand spread over glass that vibrated. The cymatic patterns produced were strangely beautiful, and increasingly complex for higher sounds.
